I'm fresh, energetic & ready to write.

Thanks for taking the time to read my portfolio.

Welcome to My Portfolio and Blog

Hello Internet portfolio visitor, wherever you may be from.

My name is Holly Calkins.

Like any college graduate looking for an entry-level position my resume is a little…thin. But I’ve used every position as an opportunity to hone the skills I’ll use to make an impact at your company. For instance, I have had marketing internships with Chrysler and with Smith Center for Healing and the Arts, giving me hands on experience dealing with different clients and the media. My many years as a lifeguard and my experience as the Aquatics Manager at Santa Barbara’s swanky Alisal resort sharpened my natural people skills and taught me to keep a cool head in a crisis. Years spent perched on a lifeguard stand also reinforced my determination to succeed in the communications industry.

I am freakishly organized and very detail oriented. Most of the time this is a good thing. Except when it takes me an afternoon to alphabetize my spice drawer.

Unlike many graduates you might interview, I don’t suffer from a sense of entitlement. I expect to work hard to earn a place of respect in your company.

I think that attitude is reflected in my samples. Take a look, then email me if you have any questions.

Looking forward to talking to you,

Holly

Create a one-of-a-kind shower invitation

Whether you are having a baby or celebrating a wedding, you want to get your guests excited with creative shower invitations. Designing your own invites could not be easier, especially with all the online tools available.

Start by deciding what kind of shower you are going to have. Is it a shower for twin boys or a saucy wedding shower for your sister-in-law? You want your guests to be clued in on the type of shower from the moment the invitation comes in the mail.

Next, decide what shape and size your invitations will be. A square invitation is a nice alternative to the traditional cards. You can order cards in any shape and size, even circles.

Play around with colors that reflect the mood you want to set for the party. Light blues, pinks and yellows go well for a baby shower, but something bold like bright green can create a more modern look. Think about a neat zebra or leopard print trimmed in raspberry for a wild bridal shower.

Get creative with different patterns and textures. Using a textured background on an invitation can give it a great feel. Check out some neat designs at nearby stationary store and get inspired. Use a font and wording that coincides with your shower theme. Think about a scroll font for a luncheon or something funkier for dinner and drinks.

Don’t forget to order matching envelopes and return address stickers to tie in your fabulous design. Whatever design you come up with can be uploaded into an online site and tweaked to become the perfect shower invitation. Some sites allow you to print the invitations at home. The best way to get started is SquiggleInvitations.com. They have hundreds of unique templates and deliver to your door. Now get started!

Christmas is a time for giving and the OU Rec Center is giving away five annual memberships this holiday season. The contest will start the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26 and will end Jan. 1, 2011. XXXXX,

How many times have you heard that American’s are obese? This is quickly becoming a noiseless issue as many schools start initiatives for healthy eating and more exercise. But Oakland University’s Recreation Center has another plan: grabbing the attention of students who don’t know they need to change their habits.

OU Rec Center is offering fitness testing for university students and community members. I think this is an interesting story and it could include tracking the students and members on their views about fitness before and after the test.

The tests include cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, body composition and muscular strength testing. OU believes the first step in getting America healthy is showing them just how fit they are. Pew research centers discovered that 73 percent of Americans think they are in better shape than they actually are.

If this seems interesting to you and you would like more information please email me or call me anytime.  Talk to you soon.

Sincerely,

Holly Fawcett

OP-ED Featuring William Beaumont Medical School

Oakland’s campus is home to more than 18,000 students being prepared to face the tough economic climate and changing the face of not only Michigan companies but companies all over the world. Why would Oakland be focusing on the medical industry during this economic downturn? What makes Oakland think it’s a good idea to open up a facility for one of the most expensive and intensive careers out there? People need doctors and nurses who know what they are doing. Period.

The medical school at OU is going to become the best facility for studying medicine in the state. With the schools outstanding educational standard and relationship with William Beaumont Hospitals, people are breaking down the doors to get in. Oakland strives to give its students the best education available and is going to do it again with the William Beaumont Medical School.

Especially in a bad economy, Michigan’s citizens need to have doctors and nurses who know what they are talking about. People don’t want to be shuffled around from doctor to doctor or specialist to specialist. They want results and answers yesterday. They want their problem solved. They want to be able to trust their doctor enough to not need a second opinion. That’s what WBMS is striving for. The trust of patients and the knowledge to get the job done and let patients get on with their lives.

Whether is a cold, cancer, or colic, patients have better things to do with their time than wait for a doctor to decide what to do. WBMS is gearing up to train doctors and nurses who know how to look at every angle, and be a dynamic and effective medical professional. These medical teams will learn how to promote, restore and maintain healthy lifestyles in their patients and their families.

One of the best aspects of the WBMS is the focus on communication. How many times have you gone to the doctors and felt ashamed to ask a question about medication or your ailment? When was the last time a doctor really sat down with you and looked like he or she could spend all day with you if you had that many concerns? The problem with going to your doctor is that (often) he or she is busy and don’t ask the right questions to make you feel 100 percent taken care of. The WBMS is focusing on the specifics of good doctor patient communication and transferring medical knowledge from doctor to patient.

WBMS is going to turn out doctors and nurses who are competent and who can give you the answers to medical questions you didn’t even know you had. The continuing development of medical schools in Michigan is giving students a choice between a good education and a great one. WBMS is offering that great medical education and creating a better Michigan for all of us: patients and medical professionals alike.

4 ways to enjoy your engagement

You are engaged! Before you know it you will be picking out your 50th anniversary invitations! It may seem like your engagement is going by slowly but time will fly. Don’t forget to enjoy this special time together. You will never be engaged again and it is entirely different from dating and being married to each other, so cherish it.

1: The first way to appreciate your engagement is to pick up a journal and write down what you are feeling. You will look back at this time of anticipation and planning with fondness. Write down the best parts of being engaged along with what you hope marriage will be like.

2: The second suggestion is to make sure you spend time with your friends and family. Don’t do everything as a couple yet, even though you want to. Take advantage of your singlehood for the next couple months because you will never get it back. Cherish the time you have with your girlfriends and spend time doing the things you love doing together.

3: The third suggestion… do things alone. Go see a play by yourself or spend a Friday night at home baking. Once again, you and your husband will be a couple from the wedding day on and you will come to cherish some alone time.

4: The last suggestion is make sure you take lots of pictures as you plan your wedding. Record your registering adventures, apartment hunting and engagement parties. Take photos of each other looking at wedding bands and tuxes. Once it is all finished you’ll really appreciate the photos of  your well-planned wedding. Use those photos to make a fun save-the-date at SquiggleInvitations.com. You can upload photos and use one-of-a-kind templates to create unique invitations, too!

Don’t wait until after your big day to start your thank you cards

Thinking about your wedding thank you cards can be daunting. Going through the mounds of gifts and sorting through cards is a lot of work. And after months and months of planning and organizing you will just want to relax. So instead of waiting until after the honeymoon to start your thank yous, start now and get some of the leg work out of the way.

After you send your wedding invitations (2-3 months before the Big Day), make sure your thank you cards are ready to go. Ordering them online at the same time as your invitations is the easiest way to go. Once you start receiving RSVP’s, grab those thank you cards and get started. First you can pre-address the envelopes with your guest’s address and then use address stickers to place your return address on the envelope. Your hand will thank you after hand writing all those addresses!

Lastly, if you have the time, you can even write the appropriate greeting in the beginning of card. During those last weeks before the wedding, life will get crazy. But if you can take the time to start thank you’s when your RSVP’s come in it will save you a headache later. Do as much of the stressful and time consuming items before the wedding so you can relax later. Then, all you have to do after the wedding is write the note, put a stamp on it and you are set. For even easier wedding thank you cards, go to SquiggleInvitations.com. They offer affordable printing and fast delivery to your door. Go ahead, cross those thank yous off your list.
